Have Your Say Campaign

In July 2005, we encouraged every child, resident, business and community group in Hull to have their say (through the ‘Have Your Say’ campaign) as part of the initial process of writing our new and exciting Community Strategy.

The Strategy aims to clearly show how a range of people will work together – with residents – over the next five years to make a better City. Along with holding special community events and roadshows, consulting local businesses, as well as community and voluntary groups, we sent every home in Hull a special questionnaire explaining our ‘vision’ for Hull and how you had the right to influence decisions about your lives and communities.

The consultation process involved sending out over 117,000 Vision Questionnaires, while online questionnaires collated feedback from a national and international perspective.

Your Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) ONE HULL, which has the responsibility of improving the quality of life of all those who live in, work in, or visit Hull, appreciated that some people may take a cynical view of the latest consultation pack we sent them. However, we wanted local people to help shape Hull’s future and contribute to the changes we make to our City.

The feedback included responses from across the country and even from America. Over 93 per cent of people who responded agreed that we should concentrate on building a better economy, improving opportunities for education and training, and aiming for a better quality of life.

This unprecedented community engagement exercise has been one of the largest ever conducted in the City - giving local people a voice in shaping improvements. We listened to your views and suggestions and utilised information from a wealth of previous research and consultation. Work is now complete on developing a new Vision for Hull, which emphasises the importance of the economy. A growing economy brings more jobs, higher paid employment, and wealth into the city.

But to create a strong economy, we need to make sure there is an educated and skilled workforce available, so education and skills are important too.

And to ensure that the quality of life improves for everyone in the city, we also need strong, safe and healthy communities.

These are the things we need to get right to achieve our Vision for Hull:

As a City, we can only reduce poverty if local people realise the real benefits of working in partnership. By bringing together important partners to focus on providing job opportunities, improving education, and dealing with anti-social behaviour and poor health, local people can help improve the quality of life for everyone.
