The Northern Area is situated in the north-western part of the city and has an estimated population of around 36,000 people across almost 14,000 households. Since May 2002, following the Boundary Commission Review of Ward boundaries, the Northern Area covers three electoral Wards – Orchard Park & Greenwood, University and Beverley Wards. These Wards are each very different in character, as are the issues of concern raised by the people who live there, although a common theme is the need to tackle anti-social behaviour and renew community confidence and neighbourhood pride.
Overall, the area is predominantly residential, with a diverse mixture of social and private housing types that include some of the most prestigious properties in Hull, while at the same time including areas of high and multiple deprivation. In residential areas adjoining the University of Hull there is a small concentrated student population.
There are many diverse community groups and voluntary sector-based agencies working in different parts of the Northern Hull area, including active residents and tenants’ associations, that all contribute to improving the area for local people.
